I’m on the road to who knows where?
Look ahead, not behind, I keep saying.
Everybody wants to be right
But only if it’s not day light?
I keep trying to find my way back,
My way back…
Look ahead, not behind, I keep saying.
Everybody wants to be right
But only if it’s not day light?
I keep trying to find my way back,
My way back…
"I'm just... who I am, y'know?"

CHARACTER FILE
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Jaye stands at about 5’5”, weight roughly 130 pounds. Course, he tends to slouch a touch, skewing the accuracy of that, but that still stands true. He’s got just a touch of pudge to him, certainly not a lot, but seeing as he doesn’t work out, it makes sense. He’s certainly not twiggy, too, but his body isn’t quite big, either, putting him at roughly ‘average’, the median of the two, and kinda lacking muscles. Doesn’t really feel like putting in the work to gain them, y’know?
The first thing that most people notice about him, however, is his scruffy blond hair. It’s straight, with a tendency to flip flop in quite a few directions, covering his eyes and causing him to always blow it out of the way or tuck it behind his ears, and comes down to about his shoulders. The second are his light green eyes, usually alight with hesitant curiosity. Just a scant few freckles dot his face, as well, with a minute smile usually present, sometimes growing bigger, but typically just small, and, on the occasion, disappearing altogether.
Clothing-wise, Jaye sticks with the same style all the time, albeit with different clothes. Loose jeans, Converse or this pair of hand-me-down hiking boots he loves to wear, coupled with a T-shirt (ranging from all colors, but typically black or green), a sweatshirt (his favorite is green, which is his favorite color, but he also has a black one, and a red one) to jam his hands into, which they pretty much live in, and when it gets colder, a jacket that overlays his sweatshirt. He also likes beanie hats, but you’re not allowed to wear them on school days at Kadic, so he saves those for the weekends. His casual clothes, coupled with his typical stance, give him a bit of an approachable demeanor. He’s the quiet, but nice kid, of course.
PERSONALITY: Jaye... is awkward. That's honestly the best way to put him. He does his best to be friendly, greeting other people with a smile and a wave, doing his best to chat, but jokes can fly over his head, and there's just the general fact that a lot of the time, there's an air of 'uncomfortableness' around him. He's the kind of boy to give a bit of a laugh when he's awkward, and just... doesn't know what to say. He's also very self-conscious about his body, and any sort of remark relating to it (whether a compliment or insult!) will make him even more uncomfortable.
He can get kind of excited over the things he likes, and that's where he finally gets comfortable, eyes shining as he relates some awesome tale about the book he just read, smile wide, and big, animated hand gestures, to go along with it. As long as they're on a subject he likes, anyone can get Jaye to relax, and once he's relaxed, he stays that way until they hit an uncomfortable topic (bodies, girls, etc.), smiling far more easily and chatting. Want to befriend him? Easiest way is to make him comfortable. Around his theater friends, he's always comfortable, though, easy-going and just generally fine.
All in all, Jaye isn't one to get mad. He gets irritated, yes, and when he does that, he lets it out in healthy ways, either venting to his sister (or brother, but usually sister), shoving himself into his homework until he feels better, or something of the sorts. On homework, he's pretty responsible, keeping a detailed list of everything he has to do every single day, and a schedule of all of his theater performances and practices.
Over all, Jaye is an awkward boy who loves to chat once he's comfortable, and is a generally good friend, loyal and always sticking up for them. Heck, he sticks up for people when he doesn't know them. Bullying? Not okay.
STRENGTHS: Jaye is, honestly, quite artistically talented, but not quite in the way you're thinking, most likely. He loves to sing, and acting is something that he's dabbled in, though he's a touch shyer with his acting skills than his singing. He's also quite good at the special effects that go on behind stage, quite adept at everything from pyrotechnics to fog screens. The theatre is his passion, whether he's onstage or off, and so he's quite good at all the skills that apply there.
Needlework and make-up, he's okay on, having to have learned a bit of sewing and make-up application to get by, but it's not his forte, though, of course, he knows more than most. School-wise, his best subject is history, as he finds that quite appealing, he's not half-bad at gym, because while he's not the most athletic out there, he certainly tries, quite a bit, in fact, so he tends to go forward in there, and Language skews, depending on if they're working on literature (in which case, high grades!) or anything else (in which case, probably not as good).
Jaye's also pretty good with electronics, albeit not in a 'coding is easy' type way. He gets how to deal with them pretty easily, as his Dad works with them, so he's picked up quite a bit, and knows his way around a computer, and the Internet.
WEAKNESSES: Grades are a big thing with him, at least, the classes he doesn't quite click with, namely, Math and Science. He tries quite hard at them, always putting forth his best effort, but they just don't click with him, meaning his grades tend to suffer. A tutor might be a good choice, but he's kind of too embarrassed (and too busy) to get one. Language, when they're not doing literature, his scores tend to skew downwards, as he really doesn't like the rest of Language, and while he tries, it just doesn't... come out the same.
His biggest issue, however, is over-commitment, and the stress that comes with that. Jaye is not one to say no, not ever, and thus, he finds himself with far too much on his plate, often staying up late into the night to work on costumes, plan out the special effects, figure out his history paper, help a friend with something... He doesn't say no, never wanting to, and ends up with a ridiculous amount of things on his plate. And, of course, when he's stressed, he doesn't get as much sleep, and the quality of his work starts to inch downwards, as does his grades. He really needs to learn to say no.
Finally, in two minor issues, he's quite insecure about his body, most comments on it getting a blush of embarrassment, or just absolute awkwardness as he tries to ignore said comment, and he's absolutely atrocious at hair styling. Don't ask him to do your hair, even if you've got five minutes to get on stage and he's the only free pair of hands. He really doesn't know what he's doing.
HISTORY: Born Jolie Severin, a female, Jaye was a fairly normal child. He was a little girl that didn’t prefer dresses, but tea party was just peachy with him, and acting and make believe were the absolute best. His parents were great, his Mom a stay-at-home Mom, and his Dad a consultant, while his older sister Avril, and his younger brother Rephael, whom he was squarely in the middle of, each two years apart from him, were great, as well. Of course, they had their tizzies, and their spats, but what siblings don’t?
When he was younger, Jolie’s primary friends were girls. Which, of course, was quite normal, given his gender. However, he was always the male of the group, per se. When they played dress-up, he played the male. When it came to their clothes, his friends were more of the dresses and pink types, whereas he staunchly refused to wear any such thing, and was content in his jeans and T-shirts. Which, of course, was perfectly fine.
He was decent in school, above average but not greatly so, while his true love lay in the arts. At a young age, 3rd grade, to be exact, as it was the youngest you could participate, and while he got a few spots ushering and the like, on the crews, it wasn’t until fourth grade that he managed to get on the special effects crew. And he loved it. All he got to do was operate the fog machines, but man, that was more than enough for him, greatly enjoying it.
And then, the next year, he landed a spot playing Gavroche in Les Miserables. It was his first part, his first thing, and he was just so delighted. Even now, Les Miserables holds a special place in his heart, as he owns copies of all the movies, several editions of the book, a few different CDs, and has all of the songs memorized. Okay, maybe he’s a big fan of it. Regardless, that part kind of shaped him, in that he threw his all into theatre. Playing different parts, both male and female (his versatility in that area made him a good catch, because he could actually pull both off), and then his love of special effects, buying and checking out books to read up on them, perfect it…
However, there was one glitch in his plans. His older sister had ended up attending Kadic Academy (her grades were good, and so she got an e-mail from it, recruiting) in 7th grade, and his parents wanted him, at the start of 6th grade, to head on over there, as well. Jaye, however, had heard the tales of their drama, and balked at that, refusing to go and giving a careful outline of his reasons, most of which involved the local community theater he was a part of, and they acquiesced. Avril was slightly disappointed, but hey, he wanted to stay.
And maybe, it was good he stayed, because it was during middle school that he began to… realize, something.
He liked being a boy.
It was simple, really. He had a tendency to wear boy-ish clothes, all the time, and given his androgynous features, both in face and the fact that he really didn’t have a single curve to speak of, it made sense that he’d get mistaken for a boy, by people who didn’t know him. What didn’t make sense, at least at first, was the fact that it made him happy when people made that mistake, and he never bothered to correct them. And while all his friends were starting to fawn over boys, while there were a select few that he liked, as well… Girls caught his attention more.
Thank goodness for cell phones and computers, because Avril was the one he ran to with this, Avril, his lovely older sister who calmed him down, talked him through it, and helped him realize that yes, this is fine. You can be that way. Really. She talked him through picking out a wardrobe that would help get the results he wanted, that looked more boyish, how to hold himself differently (watch how other boys held themselves was a good tip, and he gave Rephael some attention in that area), how to style his hair in a way that was more androgynous (he completely failed with this one, honestly), and even going as far as picking out a boy-ish name, Jaye.
And when she came home… Avril was just a big help. She helped him explain to his parents, that he wanted to be Jaye outside of the house, and wanted to be seen as a boy, no, no, he definitely didn’t want surgery, definitely didn’t want to take any drugs or whatever to change his body, he was perfectly happy with his female body… He just wanted to be seen as male. To think of himself as male. Changing his body… Yeah, he considered that a touch too far, for him.
It took explanations. Plenty of them, reasoning that no, their little girl wasn’t going to change, not really, even though she was now he, or rather, now that she figured out that she had been he all along, he was still their little Jolie and just… let him do this, please? And they acquiesced.
It was honestly kind of perfect, then, that he was hitting high school soon. And that the community theatre was too young for him, once he did so. Kadic… was a place to start fresh, sort of. He was enrolled as a male, given a single room (right next door to his sister, thankfully), and the principal knew that he was technically female, as did a few of the teachers (like Jim Morales, for example, as he dealt with the body as part of his class and all), but for the most part, to everyone, he was male.
He kept in touch with his friends from back home, writing them e-mails, texting, video-chatting on occasion, and even ventured out of Kadic into the surrounding city to find out that yes, there was a theatre out there. And yes, he could be a part of it. It was great, to be a part of the theatre again (he hadn’t gotten involved in the lackluster one that was Kadic’s theatre), and again, his versatility was well-accepted, his ability to play both male and female, plus his ever-growing knowledge of special effects… He got to implement them quite a bit.
It was also his first touch at if people were okay with him, well, being a him. All of his friends there knew that he was technically female, technically, and though it was likely a weird moment for them at first, and they acted a touch awkward… They accepted it. And him. And Jaye couldn’t be happier.
His first year at Kadic passed smoothly, with most of his friends coming from the theatre, and with all the input on how the school worked from both Avril and Rephael, he dealt with teachers easily, knew how to plan for school, what classes gave the most homework… Yeah, he had it made, honestly.
And in tenth grade, now that he’s in tenth grade, it hasn’t changed a whole heck of a lot. Jaye’s been spending more time with Avril, simply because this is her last year, and Rephael’s almost in the high school, woo! In addition… Well. There’s a couple girls around campus that he certainly wouldn’t mind… asking out.
If only he could rack up the courage.
